Songwriting- Jack and Rai's 2-cents.....

  • Keep your arrangement simple and try not to go for too long an intro. When you have long introductions, the listener tends to lose interest after 30s (unless you're writing the intro to November Rain by the Guns and Roses)
  • Don't forget your hook. It's usually the chorus or something that literally 'hooks' the listener to keep singing your song in their heads.
  • Guitarists, please tune your guitars before you record.
  • Vocalists, please make sure your works are audible and the lyrics can be heard. Especially for this competition, it's the content that the judges are looking out for!
  • Try to avoid too long a phase 'cos that might also make your listener lose interest in you.
  • Last but not least, this competition is not about who can send in the loudest/well-polished track. It's about capturing the essence of Singapore 2010 Youth Olympic Games in song and lyric so make sure you don't lose track of your story. Even if it's just a piano and voice, or if it's just guitar and vocals, that's 100% ok too. Just remember to check that vocals are not drowned out and most importantly, the essence of your song is communicated to your listener.
